Coffee: A Journey From Bean to Cup
Origins and History of Coffee
Coffee, a globally beloved beverage, originates from the highlands of Ethiopia. From legends of goat herders discovering the magical energy boost from ripe red coffee cherries, coffee has journeyed far to become an integral part of world culture. From Ethiopia, the coffee plant spread across the globe, creating famous coffee-growing regions like Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia… each region offering unique flavor profiles.
The Journey From Coffee Bean to Cup
Harvesting and Processing
Ripe coffee cherries are harvested by hand or machine. Then, they are processed to remove the outer layer, preserving the coffee bean inside. There are various coffee processing methods, from wet (washed), dry (natural) to semi-dry (honey), each method influencing the final flavor of the coffee.
Coffee Roasting
Fresh coffee beans after processing are roasted at different temperatures and times, creating different roast levels: light, medium, and dark. Each roast level will produce distinct flavors and aromas. The roasting process is a crucial step that determines the quality and taste of the coffee.
Coffee Brewing
There are many ways to brew coffee: from traditional methods like filter drip, Vietnamese iced coffee, to modern methods like Espresso, Moka Pot, Aeropress, V60… Each method provides a different sensory experience, from bold, rich flavors to subtle elegance. The choice of brewing method depends on individual preferences and tastes.
Popular Types of Coffee
There are many types of coffee around the world, each with its unique flavor and characteristics. Some popular coffee types include Arabica, Robusta, Liberica… Arabica is known for its delicious, mild flavor, while Robusta has a strong bitter taste and higher caffeine content.
Coffee Culture Around the World
Coffee is not just a beverage, but also a part of the culture of many countries. From cozy little cafes in Europe to modern, luxurious cafes in Asia, coffee is a place for socializing, meeting, sharing and enjoying life.
